It was born in 1869 in Smichov, a suburb of Prague with a small brewery, when Jan Kohout and Vilem Pick, after numerous attempts, succeeded in creating the perfect beer recipe: a well-balanced blend of malt, barley and Saaz hops.
It was around 1930 that the brewery was completely transformed. After being incorporated into the city boroughs of Prague, following the strong growth of the city and the consequent demand for an ever-increasing amount of beer, Master Brewer Josef Paspa integrated many innovations within the facility. First of all, a cooling system was installed and the wooden barrels were replaced with modern steel tanks.
The constant growth of the brewery led to a strong increase in production that reached 1 million HL in 1960.
Staropramen thus became the symbolic brewery of the city of Prague, with a prestigious role in the field of exports, beginning to trade beer first with Austria, then with Germany and Switzerland until reaching overseas, even reaching the United States.
Today Staropramen is the number one beer in Prague, present in over 40 countries while maintaining intact the spirit of Prague, the only city where it is produced.
Staropramen Premium is the flagship beer of the brewery: it is a Bohemian Lager that with 5% alcohol confirms itself as a fresh and balanced beer in which all the floral characteristics of Saaz hops emerge.
In addition to this, we also find the historic Schwarzbier Staropramen Dark, a beer with 4.4% alcohol characterized by a hint of toasted bitterness balanced by the sweetness of caramel and chocolate, and Staropramen Unfiltered, a lager with 5% alcohol produced by adding a generous amount of coriander to the wheat blend.
Starting from February 2024, Staropramen joins the QBA family thanks to a commercial agreement between the Prague brewery and Radeberger Gruppe, accompanied by other noteworthy productions.
The goal remains to convey the value of a culture that is at the same time close and distant like the Czech one, with deep respect for an authentic tradition.
